The harvest 50 years ago today

This year’s crop report shows theĀ harvest is late, but it was also late 50 years ago.

In a story published Oct. 21, 1958, ” … the (Iowa Crop and Livestock) reporting service said Iowa’s 1958 corn crop was planted comparatively early, but development was slower than usual. The dry spring and early summer depleted topsoil moisture supplies, which retarded germination of the seed in some areas of the state. “

Moisture content by Oct. 10 was 24%, which was considered normal. The 10-year average (1949-58) was 24.5%.
