Iowa Hawkeyes Football History

Iowa Hawkeye football captains Jim Hilgenberg (left) and Jim Caldwell pose for a publicity photo in Iowa City in 1976. Caldwell, a four-year starter for Iowa at defensive back under head coaches Frank Lauterbur and Bob Commings from 1972-1976, was named the head coach of the NFL Indianapolis Colts yesterday, replacing the retired Tony Dungy. Caldwell had been an assistant coach with the Colts since 2002.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

The 1976 Hawkeye football team, nicknamed “The Wild Bunch,” went 5-6 overall, 3-5 in the Big Ten Conference, and included a 7-6 upset win over Penn State.
