Harkin Learns the Trade

Corn Sweeteners

Representative Tom Harkin (right), who was seeking the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat held by Republican Roger Jepsen, learned about making fructose during a day at the ADM Corn Sweeteners plant in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, January 19, 1984.  Here he talks with Tom Beyer about equipment used in the purification of corn syrup.  Harkin, who represented Iowa’s 5th District in the U.S. House, said he is visiting Iowa industries to learn about the work Iowans do and to get their views on local and national issues.

Harkin later won the senate seat over Jepsen by an 11-point margin and has been an Iowa senator since January 3, 1985.
